There was a man. And he wandered many days. And he was hungry. He found a rich man, who had enough and to spare. He came upon the rich man and looked as if to ask for food. The rich man had compassion, and greeted the hungry man with certain foods known to give an hungered one the satisfaction he so desired. However the rich man was surprised when the lost hungry fellow said, "thank you", and quickly departed with only a few crackers in his hand. The hungry man was now satisfied but it was obvious his small portion would not last for the duration of time.

Troubled, the rich man prepared a feast, and sent word round about that all those who hungered were invited to come, and partake freely. The rich man was pleased when he found a multitude of hungry people who found their way to his grand table. Many men did eat and were quickly filled. They said their thanks and quickly moved on again.

This troubled the rich man even more. He feared lest some of those poor men would again wander into paths of deprivation, lands of famine, and go hungry. He hoped they would remember to seek after his land again, where he would keep his grand table filled for all the souls of men who hungered, and he and they may feast freely, and merely nibble no more.

Occasionally such a man did return, and the rich man stopping the once lost hungered man, who had now filled his belly with the life giving nourishment he so desperately needed, asked him: "Wilt thou take some provisions for the marrow? And where is thy brother? How can he be satisfied with only a few crackers still?"

From the filled man came they reply, "I know not, save I was hungry and eating a little am filled. On the marrow I've work to do, and may not travel again this way as often as thou wouldst invite".

And thus we can behold how false, and also the unsteadiness of the hearts of the children of men; yea, we can see that the Lord in his great infinite goodness doth bless and prosper those who put their trust in him. Yea, and we may see at the very time when he doth prosper his people, yea, in the increase of their fields, their flocks and their herds, and in gold, and in silver, and in all manner of precious things of every kind and art; sparing their lives, and delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; softening the hearts of their enemies that they should not declare wars against them; yea, and in fine, doing all things for the welfare and happiness of his people; yea, then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God, and do trample under their feet the Holy One—yea, and this because of their ease, and their exceedingly great prosperity. And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.
