IDM<------Intelligent Dance Music?
Sometimes the abbreviation IDM is used to describe a certain genre of electronic music usually associated with glitch/ambient/acid techno or even drill-n-bass artists such as Apex Twin, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada and Electric Birds. It does stand fer intelligent dance music, but I think that's a joke. With no disrespect to the artists I've mentioned, of whom are some of my favorite artists, there is nothing more intelligent about their brand of electronic music than others. I see people who resent the more puerile youth driven styles like jungle; they are always encouraging the masses to come over to the intelligent side or something. It's usually some people who went to a lot of jungle or breakbeat parties and went along with it but never really even liked it, then finally made the switch and now they beleive that "idm" is the all to end all. I just think that they like it because it gives validity to their eccentricities, and I agree on this matter because it satisifies the same imbalances fer me. But I also think that it makes them feel like some off brand genius too, hence the "intelligent" word association. Oh well. Later
